Cyprus offers something that should fundamentally shape the way a home is designed: with around 300 days of sunshine a year and a lifestyle that naturally extends outdoors, the garden is not simply the space around the house — it is part of the living environment. I believe outdoor living deserves the same level of thought and attention as architecture and interior design, with spaces for dining, relaxing, swimming, entertaining and simply enjoying the landscape becoming natural extensions of the home. For me, a Mediterranean garden is therefore not about filling a plot with plants, but about creating a coherent relationship between architecture, landscape and the way people live. As an architect, I approach the garden through the same principles that shape a building: proportion, scale, movement, orientation, views, levels, materials and light. Topography is something to work with rather than erase, while the Cypriot climate — its intense sun, heat, wind and long dry seasons — becomes an essential part of the design. The result should feel less like a garden added to a house and more like a complete living environment, where architecture, landscape and outdoor life belong naturally to one another.
